She'd see Psyche on the stage, wearing some weird grey garb. Penelope had seen it on the news before, some green haired terrorist with quantum mechanics powers...Atomsk? Adamix? Atomix! She'd see Psyche walk over to her,and hear him speak. His voice sounded very refined, as he had Vindalee standing behind him, who mouthed "Hey girl glad you could make it"


"Welcome to the meeting of a local chapter of The Empowered Elite. We hope to raise enough attention in our city to receive favor with the High Lord himself, Atomix. TOnight we have gathered here those of us with abilities who have been disenfranchised, trampled upon and terrorized,now the power is in our hands, and we will unite with others to help our lord shape and chang ethe world to the way it should be!" he said, his voice getting louder as Burst in the far corner of the room nodded. "Penelope, if you join us tonight, you'll be on your way to ascension, rise to a higher part of the food chain! he said, as Vindalee created an image. Penelope would see Atomix floating above a US Airbase, fighting with Astroman when he first announced his 'plans' to the world

"Our lord is called a heretic by the nonbelievers, but who else takes the disenfranchised metas and gives them REAL power, not keeping them in a school or making them into students and just scholars? With him he makes you a soldierly scholar, one with a mind as a weapon! He is the one who wil light the way, and we will make ourselves known TO him and for him!" he'd say, as Vindalee punctuated it by showing one of Atomix's hideouts, the one in SOuth America.

So yeah, it was about this time that Penelope realized just how badly she'd messed up. "Ummm....." Really not sure what to say, she trailed off.

Vindalee would step closer to her friend, smiling as she grabbed her shoulders. "Crazy right? Imagine all that power, all of those choices, what WE could do, NO ONE to tell us that we don't fit in or judge us for being outside the norm, whaddya say Penelope, ar eyou down?" Vindalee asked, clearly happy about this and hoping her friend felt the same

Psyche and the others looked on, interesred in her choice

This....she had always wanted power...always dreamed of having it, she had studied metahuman powers, wished and wished she would get some of her own just so she could stand up for herself. She thought about the beatings her parents gave her, the kids at school teasing her, Jess and her friends tormenting her and all of the times she cried at night. Now, here was a chance, a chance for greatness, to achieve power beyond her wildest dreams, to find acceptance and belonging. And all she had to do was say yes. Say yes and she could leave her old life behind and find greatness. She had every reason to. She hadn't met many good people in this city, she didn't owe them anything. "I...I..." She looked at the three, at Vindalee, the first friend she ever had, someone she could sit and talk and laugh with, at Psyche, who seemed to believe in Atomix the Supervillain so much, at Bruiser the giant....she thought about what they had shown her. Atomix fighting Astroman. Astroman. The hero. The Golden Man. The savior of the world time and time again. His father, Alexander Chase, had given his life for the world in the last invasion. The entire world had cried. Astroman. Astrowoman. AstroMother. Time and again they had fought for this world when they could be doing what Atomix did and using their powers for themselves. They were heroes. And heroes never turned to the dark side. She looked Vindalee in the eyes and made her decision. Going by what she had seen so far, this just might get her killed. Penelope she had no chance of fighting them all, let alone one on one. These were people who not only had belief, but were obviously trained in their powers and could fight. Penelope only had two powers that she had just gotten. Despite all of this, despite having every reason to make the obvious choice...."I....Can't."

I...will take the power from the villains of this world...the ones who hurt the innocent...but I will not harm the innocent. I'll stand up the bullies of this world no matter who they are. I can feel your belief and I thank so much for being my friend and I am so, so sorry but I can't fight by your side."

The parents of Bruiser and I were decent people to everyone except us, and tried to light him on FIRE when he turned 12, I saw it happen! you want to fight the bullies then help us! that's what we're doing! we WERE the oppressed, we don't have to be anymore!" Vindalee pleaded to her, holding the arms. "I wish you'd reconsider, I really do" she said, tear dropping from her eyes


Bruiser seemed to move in front of the door, while Psyche observed quietly with Burst before speaking

"You can not pressure your friend Vindalee, if she does not want to join the revolution then, that's her choice"

Burst had strange greenish energy pop around her hands and he muttered something in Jamaican Patois but ti was too fast for Penelope to understand. When Psyche put his hand out though Burst backed up. "Well, now that you've made your decision, I won't lie and say I'm not disappointed that you wouldn't want to join your kin. We'll let you go, but on one condition" Psyche said, walking over to her and pulling his hand out of his pocket, which had black marks wrapped around it. "Do. Not. Stand. In. Our. Way. You were one of the specials, and you've sided with the mundane. Get in our way and-" he looked at Vindalee, then back at her. "Mercy will more than likely not be shown to you" he said, stepping out of the way as Bruiser held the door open

As she walked out, Bruiser picked up Vindalee and said goodnight to Burst and Psyche, who stood their talking


"So, looks like she ain't gonna join us, makes the plan a bit harder huh?" Burst asked

"No, instead we'll just need to find out WHO she got the powers from, I'm sure they'd LOVE to give us all we need to know, to keep her from ruining our statement. Contact them Burst, I"ll take care of the rest" Psyche said, changing out of the uniform and looking out at the city from the window

Penelope took the long route home, it gave her time to think. She had told them off, had turned down their offer and made the choice to defend the city from criminals at the cost of her only friend. Penelope shivered at the cold. She should have worn warmer clothes. After kicking a can on the ground, she spotted a fire escape leading up to the top of an apartment building. Seeing nobody around, she began climbing it. First the ladder and then continuing on up until she reached the top of the building. Penelope walked to the edge of the rooftop and looked out at the city, seeing all of the buildings and the stars in the sky. She could hear cars around the city. A city of 8 million people and she had made the decision to fight for all of them.
Penelope stood their for quite awhile just looking out at the city before climbing down.

"I'm home." Penelope called into her house as she opened the door.

"Well it's about damn time!" Her father walked up to her. "And just where the hell were you?"

"None of your business. I've had a long night and I'm going to bed." Penelope turned and her father grabbed her arm. "Don't turn away from me little girl! Now you tell me where you've been whoring it up and maybe you can leave this house in two days instead of two weeks!"

Penelope pulled her arm away. "Not tonight dad. Do not push me." She warned, her tone deadly serious.

"YOU LITTLE B-!" Her father raised his fist to her and swung at her just like he always had and expecting it to knock her to the floor and make her bleed and cry just like every other time. No more. Penelope held up her left hand and caught his fist. "THE F-!" Penelope shoved him backwards several feet away from her. Her father fell on his back and looked up at her.

"I warned you. I told you not to push me."

She walked over to him. Her father got up on his feet and punched at her again. Penelope let it hit. The punch turned her head but that was all. There was a krak sound as her father's hand broke. He yelled in pain. Penelope grabbed him with her right hand, picked him up off of his feet and carried him over to the wall where she slammed him against it hard enough to make him yell out in pain again. She pulled him forward, face to face. "You.Can't.Hurt.Me.Anymore. GOT IT?!" She then turned around and tossed him across the kitchen into the pantry door, breaking it and causing food bags and cans to fall on him. Her father was out like a light. Penelope's mother simply stood in place, having witnessed the entire 'fight'. Penelope turned to her and adjusted her glasses. "That goes for you too. Goodnight." With that, she turned and walked up to her bedroom as her mother silently dragged father to the couch and tended to him.

As the night went on, Vindalee and her brother Bruiser stayed at home, until Bruiser got a call from Psyche

"sup man? Oh, you found somebody? a bunc of somebody's? Well then, I guess we should meet them" he said over the phone, putting a blanket over his sister as she slept on the couch of the abandoned apartment they stayed in. Even though she went to school, they had to put a fake address for her enrollment to be eligible. He threw on an over-sized parka, and headed out the door. He met Psyche and Burst at a parking lot, where there was another crew across from them. Psyche walked up to the leader, saying "So you're the Powerhouse gang huh? y'like us, special?>"
